Mosha (Thai Elephant that lost a limb) gets a prosthetic leg

Thai elephant Mosha
Mosha, a Elephant from Thailand, was injured by a landmine at the Myanmar (Burma)-Thailand border while being used by loggers along the area. At the time of the incident, Mosha was barely 7 months old. However along her formative years, Mosha has had a total of 9 legs due to her massive increases in size as she grows.

When the incident happened in 1999, Mosha was taken to an elephant hospital funded by the Friends of the Asian Elephant Foundation in northern Thailand were she was catered for and a new prosthetic leg was designed by engineers and fitted by surgeon Therdchai Jivacate

According to Surgeon Jivacate, if Mosha was not given a prosthetic leg, "she would have dies" because her spine was "going to bend" by the resulting unbalanced gait.

It is reported that so many elephants used as loggers in the forest bordering Burma and Thailand had been injured from landmines left as the aftermath of the conflict between rebels groups and the Burma (Myanmar) military forces some decades ago. It is as a result of this situations that the Friends of the Asian Elephants Foundation was founded in 1993 and as of the time of this report ha about 20 elephants in its care.
