UNIZIK Professor of Law Makes List of Possible Senior Advocates of Nigeria 2017

Offornze Amucheazi

The Legal Practitioners Privilege Committee (LPPC) Thursday released a list of 91 legal practitioners in Nigeria that may possibly be elevated to the enviable rank of Senior Advocate of Nigeria in 2017. Among the names released was that of Prof. Offornze Amucheazi, a professor of law at Nnamdi Azikiwe University, Awka.

The Legal Practitioners Privilege Committee is a creation of Nigeria's Legal Practitioners Act, Cap L11 LFN 2004, with the function of elevating legal practitioners in Nigeria to the rank of senior advocate of Nigeria (the Nigeria's equivalent of the British Queen's or King's Counsel). The elevation is deemed a testament of the awardee's contribution to the development of Nigeria's legal practice either through courtroom advocacy or scholarly contributions. A critical requirement for such conferment is that the legal practitioner, who must have been at least 10 years at the Nigerian Bar, must have achieved distinction in the field.

The journey to "SANship" begins with the intending recipient formally making an application to the LPPC. This is but the simplest of the herculean tasks, as the fulfillment of all the intial requirements does not guarantee that the applicant shall be so honoured (for some of the initial requirements, see here). Nor, does making the initial shortlist ultimately result in conferment. The list just released is the first of two. The publication is a subtle invite to the public to register any objection to the candidacy of any of the applicants, for the eventual pruning of the list to just 22 names.

A lot of legal practitioners had made the preliminary list more than 2 times in the past without being called to the inner bar (such persons include Mr. Festus Keyamo, whose name also features in this year's preliminary list). Therefore, that Prof. Offornze Amucheazi's name is part of the shortlist does not guarantee that he would be admitted into the prestigious rank, but it serves as a prima facie recognition of his contribution to the legal profession as an academician. Amuchieazi is well published, and considered an authority in Nigeria labour law and constitutional law. He currently on sabbatical to the Nigerian Institute of Legislative Studies.

Other notable persons to make the list include: the brother of the Vice President of Nigeria, Akinlolu Osinbajo; lagos lawyer, Festus Keyamo and former Ondo State gubernatorial aspirant, Olusola Oke.
