With this defeat, Messi's nightmare of not winning any trophy for his country's national team continues. After breaking Bastituta's record as Argentina's highest goal scorer, it was expected that Lionel Messi would help his country win the championship which has eluded the country since 1993. However, instead of scoring the winning goal, Messi, who just turned 29 years old two days ago, missed a crucial penalty and helped sink the Argentinian's hope.

Chile defeated Argentina by 4 goals to 2 on penalty shoot-out.

The originally South American championship which in its 100 years anniversary was expanded to a 16 team contest and included was for the first time played in a non-CONMEBOL country, having been hosted by United States. Out of all the participants, Uruguay has been the most successful with 15 championships.
