Turkish Ex Beauty Queen Sentenced To 14 Months In Jail For Insulting Erdogan

Merve Buyuksarac, 27, was sentenced to 14 months suspended prison sentence for insulting Turkish President, Recep Erdogan.
Buyuksarac, the 2006 Miss turkey, was briefly held last year for sharing a satirical poem on her instagram handle in 2014.

Her lawyer says he will appeal the ruling in a higher court, while appealing a formal objection to the ruling. In recent times, rights group have condemned turkey for backtracking on freedom of speech.

According to the BBC, almost 2000 people, including celebrities and school children, have been prosecuted in Turkey for 'Insulting' the president since he came into the office in 2014, under a previously little used law.

The ex-beauty's sentence was suspended on the condition that she is not to re-offend within the next five years.
