Kung-fu Prime Minister elbows an M.P on the floor of the House

House of Commons, Canada

Video coverage has surfaced online showing the Prime Minister of Canada dragging another Member off the Parliament by the arm against his wish, and elbowing another in the process.

Trudeau's tweet apology

As the Speaker of the Canadian House of Commons was trying to set a vote in motion on Wednesday for the House to consider how much time the House would need to debate on the controversial assisted-death bill, it was suspected that the opposition were covertly trying to prevent the House from proceeding with the business of the day.

Several MP members of the minority parties, including the leader of NDP Tom Mulcair, blocked a part of the aisle. Although they were chatting, other MPs, including the Prime Minister thought otherwise. The Prime Minister actually thought that the Whip of the opposition was attempting to delay the commencement of the House`s business of the day.

It is customary for the Whip of the government and that of the opposition to enter the chamber together through their respective sides of the centre aisle, bow to the speaker and then to each other before taking their assigned seats. However, while the whips entered the House together, both could not walk up to bow to the speaker together as the opposition whip encountered MP members of the opposition along the centre aisle, thus prompting the charismatic Prime Minister to offer a helping hand by “grabbing” MP Gord Brown by the arm through the traffic of opposition MPs, and elbowing NDP MP Ruth Ellen Brosseau in the process. Neither MP Brown nor MP Brosseau found the action of the P.M pleasant. So did other MPs, especially those in the opposition, although the Prime Minister, Mr Justin Trudeau felt the obstruction was an attempt to "block" the House from commencing its business of the day. According to the Trudeau, all he wanted to do was to get the opposition whip for a "double whip" in order to have the proceedings commenced.

The charismatic Prime Minister has however repeatedly apologised for the incident, stating that “That intervention was not appropriate”. In addition to apologising on more than four occasions on the floor of the House, the visibly contrite Prime Minister has continuously expressed his contrition through his twitter handle.
